Firefighter, 27, killed in horror US lumber mill explosion
Maine State Fire Marshal describes scene of mass casualty explosion at Searsmont lumber mill
A firefighter was killed and at least 11 people were injured in a fire and explosion at Robbins Lumber in Searsmont, Maine.
The deceased firefighter was identified as 27-year-old Andrew Cross from the Morrill Volunteer Fire Department, with memorials held in his honour.
Ten patients were transferred to MaineHealth Maine Medical Center in Portland, and one was in critical condition at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
The incident began with a silo fire, which escalated into an explosion, spreading the blaze across multiple buildings and damaging fire trucks.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the historic Robbins Lumber mill will remain closed indefinitely.
