Cyclospora cases climb across Florida counties

A new outbreak of the cyclospora parasite, causing severe gastrointestinal illness, is under federal investigation, with over 12,000 total cases reported nationwide.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is investigating another outbreak linked to at least 72 of the nation’s cases. It’s unclear what product may be implicated in the outbreak but the agency said Wednesday that it had “initiated traceback” in an attempt to find the origin of the parasitic illnesses.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed 4,173 cases across more than 40 states and reported at least 308 hospitalizations since May 1.
Michigan has reported a significant number of cases, with 7,171 confirmed, contributing to this season’s record-high cyclospora infections.
Cyclosporiasis, typically contracted from contaminated produce, can lead to severe dehydration and weight loss, with cooking produce to 158 degrees Fahrenheit being the only method to kill the parasite.
