The family of a jockey who suffered a brain bleed in a fall has posted a heart-wrenching update.
Kristy Bennett was taken to hospital in a critical but stable condition in hospital after she was injured while she was taking part in a trial at Gold Coast. Her horse collapsed after crossing the line and she came off.
The 29-year-old, who has ridden 186 winners from nearly 3,000 mounts since she had her first ride in 2018 had recently moved from Western Australia to Queensland to ride trackwork for champion trainer Tony Gollan.
According to reports she suffered a bleed on the brain and after being attended by medics, she was transported to Southport University Hospital, unconscious but breathing, where she underwent surgery.
She was placed in an induced coma since the accident more than two weeks ago and remains unconscious according the latest update issued on behalf of her sister Bella and mother Irene.
“Kristy remains stable after suffering traumatic brain injury and vertebrae fractures,” the family said. “She remains unconscious and her rehabilitation could take years to complete and her journey dealing with this injury is far from over.
“Going forward, we won’t have any updates for some time while the amazing doctors and nurses do their incredible work providing Kristy with the best possible care.

The Australian Jockeys’ Association said: “Kristy remain unconscious after suffering traumatic brain injuries and vertebrae fractures. She remains unconscious and her rehab could take years to complete.
“Going forward we won’t have any updates for some time while the amazing doctors and nurses do there incredible work providing Kristy with the best possible care.
“On behalf of our family and Kristy we want to express our deepest gratitude to everyone in QLD and WA for there.
“Unwavering support and love. Our journey and Kristy’s will be long and her journey dealing with this injury is far from over.
