An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for the entire tri-state region from Wednesday afternoon until Friday evening as feels-like temperatures are expected to reach 115 degrees Fahrenheit in New York.
New Yorkers are also bracing for the chance of severe storms Wednesday afternoon, alongside the dangerously high temperatures across New York City.
“Heat index values are forecast to reach up to 115F for much of the area on Thursday and Friday,” the National Weather Service warned.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani has urged residents to plan to spend time in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible, locate their nearest cooling center, avoid strenuous activity during the hottest hours and learn the signs of heat illness.
Mamdani said to call 311 if you see someone experiencing homelessness who may need assistance and, “Do what New Yorkers do best: look out for one another. Check on older adults, people with disabilities, neighbors with chronic illnesses, and anyone who may not have access to air conditioning. A simple phone call or knock on the door could save a life.”
