It doesn’t take scorching temperatures to get the nation hunting for the ice bucket — Deliveroo data has revealed that a modest 16°C is all it takes for Brits to crack open the Aperol and embrace the sunshine.

The findings, which highlight just how seriously Brits approach their seasonal food and drink habits, show that orders of the beloved summer tipple surge by nearly 400% on the on-demand delivery app once temperatures reach a relatively mild 16°C.

Suzy McClintock, VP of Consumer and New Verticals at Deliveroo said: “We’ve found that Brits don’t need a heatwave to catch those summer feelings; just a glimpse of sunshine is enough to send Aperol orders through the roof.”

It also emerges that London and Manchester are the country’s biggest Aperol-loving cities, followed by Brighton, and the towns of Camberley and Crawley.

But it’s not just the Italian apéritif Brits gravitate towards when the temperature rises. So-called ‘Picky Bits’ have also seen a considerable spike on Deliveroo when the sun comes out.

Orders of these picnic staples climbed by nearly 40% as conditions grew warmer, with 18°C proving the tipping point for snackable treats such as dips, houmous, sausage rolls, olives and savoury pastries.

Deliveroo also discovered that no British summer is truly complete without dips, which topped the charts as the most popular ‘Picky Bits’ category on the platform. Houmous has been crowned the undisputed champion of the UK’s favourite dips, with cream cheese & chive, guacamole and tzatziki rounding out the top choices.

But no dip is complete without something to scoop it with – the most beloved ‘Picky Bits’ accompaniments include sausage & savoury rolls, olives, savoury pastries, antipasti, breadsticks, and charcuterie, with Brits embracing the fridge-to-table approach the moment the sun peeks through.

Suzy added: “Whether it’s a spontaneous park picnic or the first ‘Picky Bits’ dinner of the year in the garden, we’re seeing a real shift in how people shop as soon as the winter chill lifts.

“We’re ready to bring the summer essentials to doorsteps in as little as 20 minutes – because when the British sun actually decides to show up, you won’t want to miss the moment!”

Brits can order both Aperol and Picky Bits on Deliveroo from supermarkets like Sainsbury’s, Co-op, Waitrose and Morrisons.
