Ex-OnlyFans model gets six years jail term over death of Nigerian man

Nigerian-American man, Christian Tobechukwu “Toby” Obumseli, who was fatally stabbed by his American girlfriend, Courtney Clenney, in Miami, United States, in 2022, has had his killer sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter.
Clenney, a 30-year-old former OnlyFans model, pleaded guilty to manslaughter with a deadly weapon on Monday and was sentenced to six years in prison, followed by five years of probation, Fox News reported.
Clenney had initially faced a second-degree murder charge over the April 3, 2022 death of Obumseli, 27, at their luxury apartment in Miami’s Edgewater neighbourhood.
Under the plea agreement, she will receive credit for the nearly four years she has already spent in custody since her arrest in August 2022, leaving her with about two more years to serve before beginning her probation.
After her release, Clenney will be required to undergo mental health and substance abuse evaluations and treatment.
Prosecutors also said they would oppose any attempt by Clenney to financially profit from Obumseli’s death.
“We do believe that nobody should benefit financially from murdering somebody,” Assistant State Attorney Shawn Abuhoff said.
Obumseli’s family told the court that his death had left a permanent void in their lives and that no sentence could restore what they had lost.
“No sentence, no plea can bring back my son to me,” his mother said.
A representative of the family said Obumseli “loved deeply” and remained in what they described as a destructive relationship despite previous incidents of violence.
“Your actions have left the Obumseli family with a void that can never be filled,” the representative said.
“A chair where a family gathers for holidays will always remain empty.”
The family also said Obumseli had a future and that his life had meaning, adding that he had been “robbed of all those things” while Clenney still had the opportunity to continue with hers.
Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said the plea agreement meant that Obumseli’s family finally heard Clenney accept responsibility for his death. She added that the agreement was reached in consultation with and with the approval of the family.
Obumseli, who was from the Dallas-Plano area of Texas, attended Plano East High School and Texas Tech University before moving to Miami.
His death followed a domestic dispute with Clenney, who had maintained that she acted in self-defence. Prosecutors, however, presented evidence of what they described as a pattern of violence in the couple’s relationship.
The case also generated public debate after old social media posts attributed to Obumseli resurfaced following his death. His family condemned the views expressed in the posts while continuing to demand accountability over his killing.
Obumseli’s family had also filed a civil lawsuit against Clenney and companies connected to the apartment building, alleging battery and inadequate security. The claims against Clenney were resolved before the criminal plea agreement was announced.
The guilty plea brings an end to a case that has remained in the public spotlight for more than four years, with Clenney now expected to spend about two more years in prison before beginning her five-year probation.
