Essex train probe finds track might have been damaged before crash
- A Rail Accident Investigation Branch probe revealed a Greater Anglia train was travelling at 77mph when its rear carriage derailed south of Wickford station on 14 August.
- The driver reported seeing a kink in the track shortly before the derailment, which dragged the rear carriage for 1.5 miles but resulted in no injuries.
- Forward-facing CCTV confirmed a track misalignment at the derailment site, which caused significant damage to the track, signalling, and overhead electrification equipment.
- The investigation is examining track maintenance, train performance, and the effectiveness of measures taken to mitigate risks during hot weather.
- Network Rail introduced amended timetables on Essex lines after record heatwaves caused clay soil beneath the track to dry out and shrink.
