  • Enzo Fernandez, the Argentina and Chelsea midfielder, was sent off during the World Cup final against Spain after accumulating two yellow cards within a 10-minute period.
  • His first yellow card was issued in the 82nd minute for dissent, as he reacted furiously to not receiving a free-kick after a minor touch from Spain’s Rodri.
  • The second booking, leading to his dismissal, occurred in the third minute of stoppage time for a late challenge on Spain’s Pau Cubarsi, a foul which pundit Alan Shearer labelled as ‘stupid’.
  • Fernandez, who had scored Argentina’s equaliser in the semi-finals, became the sixth player and the third from Argentina to receive a red card in a men’s World Cup final.
  • Separately, Lionel Messi faced criticism for allegedly attempting to get Marc Cucurella sent off shortly after Fernandez’s dismissal, by reporting him for communicating with his mouth covered.
