Shoaib Bashir is set to make his England cricket comeback at Lord’s on Thursday, 11 months after his last Test appearance and an Ashes tour where he was not selected.
The 22-year-old off-spinner has been chosen over all-rounder Rehan Ahmed for the first Rothesay Test of the summer, with head coach Brendon McCullum noting Bashir’s ability to play a crucial holding role.
Only one position remains undecided in the starting XI, with Gus Atkinson expected to retain his spot against competition from Hampshire’s Sonny Baker, despite Baker’s impressive potential.
Brendon McCullum praised Sonny Baker as a fast bowler capable of reaching 90mph, swinging the ball, and delivering a skiddy bouncer, suggesting his inclusion would depend on specific match conditions, such as a hot, flat pitch.
McCullum also addressed his increased media appearances, explaining that he feels it is his responsibility to be present and navigate the team through a challenging period following a difficult winter.
