Doctor issues mosquito warning amid UK heatwave

  • Dr Mojca Kristan from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine suggests that species capable of transmitting severe illnesses like dengue fever and Zika could become established in the UK within years, driven by climate change.
  • While invasive species such as the Asian tiger mosquito are not currently established, their eggs have been detected, and some related viruses are present in Europe.
  • Modelling studies indicate that by the 2060s, London’s climate could support the endemic transmission of dengue fever.
  • The public is advised to use insect repellent and wear protective clothing to prevent bites, as the risk of disease-carrying mosquitoes spreading serious illness may increase.
