A manhunt has been launched after a baby was abducted from a hospital ward.

The baby boy was only seven days old when he was taken from the neonatal ward of a German hospital.

Police say the tot was snatched from the Lüdenscheid hospital in North Rhine-Westphalia by a woman impersonating a nurse.

The suspect is said to be in her mid-20s to early 30s with blonde hair. She was wearing a light blue coat and large glasses.

Police described how she walked into a patient’s room at the hospital at 3.15pm and took the infant, pretending it was for an examination.

The child was found about an hour later at 4.10pm lying naked in the stairwell of a nearby car park next to a ticket machine.

An ambulance took the child back to the hospital where he is said to be doing well.

The Sterncenter parking garage is a multi-story car park about an eight minutes drive from the hospital.

A large-scale police operation was launched after the baby was found, with police saying they have no clear idea why the woman took the child. Family members reportedly said they did not recognise the woman posing as a nurse.

Police have launched a hunt for the woman, with officers scouring CCTV footage and using a sniffer dog in their investigations.

The force said the woman was blonde, very slim and about 5ft10 with her hair worn in a braid.
