Denmark has renewed its defence of Greenland, with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen telling Donald Trump her country “will respond” if threatened by the United States. The PM’s words come as Copenhagen and Washington continue to work towards a “viable solution” regarding Greenland, which Trump has repeatedly argued that the island nation belonging to the Kingdom of Denmark should be a US territory as he considers it vital for ‘national security’. In an interview with Polish nationwide daily newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza, Ms Frederiksen said a high-level working group has been established to continue its discussions with America. But, even though talks of being held, it appears the Kingdom of Denmark has no intentions of conceding any of its sovereign borders.

“I am not seeking a conflict with the United States, but if someone threatens us, we will respond,” she emphasised to Gazeta Wyborcza’s journalist Bartosz T Wieliński.
According to the Danish PM, following US threats about taking control of Greenland, all European allies expressed support for Denmark and pledged to act similarly if such a situation were to arise. Ms Frederiksen said that she hopes America will understand that the loyalty of Greenland’s population cannot be “bought”, with the islanders able to determine their own future. She also stated that NATO has increased its activity in the Arctic region in the wake of Trump’s threats to take Greenland, adding that a stronger allied presence in and around the island nation should put an end to the debate.

Her comments come in the wake of a meme-filled Saturday afternoon for the US President, with Trump sharing to his own Truth Social a meme of himself peeking over the mountain-filled horizon of Greenland, like some sort of god or – perhaps more in line with the local’s point of view – like Godzilla. The giant Kaiju-Trump appears under the headline: “Hello, Greenland!” Trump has repeatedly argued that Greenland should be a US territory, as he believes the nation is vital for national security, much to the chagrin of Greenland, its people, and the overall Kingdom of Denmark.
