Napoli coach Antonio Conte has suggested that Pep Guardiola would be an ideal candidate to take charge of the Italian national team, while insisting there is no agreement between himself and the Italian Football Federation over the role.
Speaking on the speculation surrounding the Italy coaching position, Conte made it clear that no discussions or agreements are currently in place.
“There’s zero between the Italian Federation to become the head coach. Zero so far. Let’s see in the future,” as reported by Fabrizio Romano on X on Monday.
Conte also pointed out that even the leadership structure of the federation is still uncertain, adding: “There’s not even the Federation president yet… but let me say. Is Italy ready to appoint a top coach?”
He went on to question whether the financial resources exist to secure a high-profile manager, referencing Guardiola as an example of the level he believes would be suitable for the job.
“I read about Pep Guardiola. Should I suggest a name, I’d say Pep. But… do they have the funds to make it happen? It’s too early to say,” Conte said.
The remarks come amid ongoing speculation about the future of the Italy national team coaching role, with Conte’s name frequently linked to the position.
PUNCH Online had reported that Napoli are set for a managerial change at the end of the season after head coach Antonio Conte reportedly decided to leave the club.
