Concerns have been raised that Carlos Alcaraz’s wrist injury could keep him out of the entire season following his Wimbledon withdrawal. The seven-time Grand Slam winner announced he would not attend SW19 in June, admitting he “wasn’t ready to compete.”

Now, Spanish media has delved into the worrying details of Alcaraz’s injury that may completely derail his 2026 campaign. Punto de Break reported that Carlos and his team of doctors “don’t know the answer” to the issue and the star has a “very bleak outlook” towards the rest of the season.

Mundo Deportivo reported that Alcaraz is dealing with “De Quervain’s tenosynovitis,” an inflammation of the tendon in his thumb that can cause “limited function.” This injury is common among tennis stars and is typically caused by “repetitive movement.”

Catalan media outlet Sport agreed with this diagnosis and states that the issue “carries a high risk of relapse,” meaning he could be bidding farewell to the rest of the 2026 season. However, Alcaraz’s own words suggest that this will not be the case and he could return in time for the US Open in August.

Punto de Break disagreed with the above claim and suggested that the young tennis player should be “patient” and preserve his health over winning tournaments.

Alcaraz began the 2026 season by winning his first Australian Open title and becoming the youngest male tennis player to complete the career Grand Slam. He was looking ahead to more silverware but will now miss theentire clay and grass-court seasons.

The 23-year-old is likely to lose ground in the world rankings to rival Jannik Sinner, who replaced him as world number one in April. Alcaraz pulled out of the French Open and hinted at the current state of play, admitting his focus was on longevity in the sport.

He said: “I have a very long career ahead of me, with many years still to come. Forcing things at this Roland Garros could really harm me for future tournaments.”
