A chef who plied his trade at a Michelin-starred restaurant has revealed the supermarket curry sauce he reckons is “banging” – and it’s neither Patak’s nor Sharwood’s. Will Murray previously worked at the two Michelin-starred Dinner by Heston Blumenthal in Mayfair and now co-runs Fallow, Roe and FOWL in the capital.

In 2024, Luxury London noted that Will and business partner Jack Croft “always aim to do things differently”. That’s plain to see at Fallow, where diners can savour such delicacies as smoked cod’s head, octopus crumpet, and tandoori cauliflower.

The publication described how the restaurant wowed critics, food lovers and even “fellow London chefs” alike. Away from the hustle and bustle of professional kitchens, however, Will confessed that what he and his family tuck into at home is “pretty bog standard”.

His remarks came to light during an exclusive interview, in which he chatted about everything from the joys of a full English breakfast to cooking the perfect steak and mastering a summer barbecue.

When quizzed about any particular brands he favours, Will revealed that he and his family go for a “combination of different stuff”, including Tesco, local delis and London charcuterie Cobble Lane Cure.

Will said: “Funny thing is, though, I’ve got three young kids, so it’s very much a combination of different stuff for us. But we eat pretty bog standard. We shop at Tesco’s and do pretty much standard stuff.”

He revealed that at weekends, he might buy a “nice piece of meat”, though he typically works on Sundays. Will added: “I use a lot…like a local deli quite a lot. So I like to get a lot of stuff from like…as much as I can from like local suppliers and local delis.”

He continued: “I love like charcuterie from Cobble Lane Cure. So I’ll get that like every now and then for the weekend. My kids just like, you know, standard stuff. They like those Heck sausage, chicken sausages, and yeah, like, you know, a good branded De Cecco pasta.”

Will then disclosed his fondness for a particular brand of curry sauce: “Gymkhana curry sauces; I don’t know if you guys get those? Yeah, they’re really good. So yeah, they’re banging.”

Produced by the same chefs behind the celebrated Indian restaurant Gymkhana, in Mayfair, the sauces can be found in supermarkets. Options on offer include butter masala, tikka masala, Goan curry, madras, rogan josh and vindaloo.

Gymkhana’s collection also features marinades and chutneys, promising to bring the “purest flavors of India into your own kitchen”.

It’s important to mention that the sauces come with a somewhat heftier price tag than some alternatives. For instance, Gymkhana Goan Curry Cooking Sauce 300ml from Sainsbury’s will cost you £6.75.

By contrast, Sharwood’s Cooking Sauce Balti 420g from the same shop is priced at £2.65, while Patak’s Balti Curry Sauce 450g can be picked up for £2.45.
