Carney comes out swinging against US demands after trade talks collapse

Trump says new multi-million dollar White House helipad will be used ‘like a table, for cocktail parties’
  • United States tariffs of 50% took effect on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods after last-minute trade negotiations between the two nations broke down.
  • Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney immediately promised to retaliate, saying: “Canada will match those tariffs dollar for dollar to protect our workers and businesses.”
  • Carney blamed Washington for the breakdown, saying that “last-minute changes in the U.S. proposed terms were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal.”
  • U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that Canada upended a potential deal by introducing new demands and walking back previous commitments.
  • Donald Trump invoked Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, a Great Depression-era law, to justify the 50 percent import taxes on Canadian products.
