The African Democratic Congress, ADC, vice presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, says the church has the responsibility of speaking truth to power at costs.
Amaechi made this statement on Tuesday when he appeared as a guest in an interview on ‘Politics Today’, a programme on Channels Television.
He remark stems from the recent comment of of the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, who said the present administration is bent on winning the 2027 elections by all means.
The clerics statement has however been attacked by the presidency and supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
Speaking, however, Amaechi said “The church has it as its responsibility to speak truth to power always.
“When the Catholic Church is crying about the possibility of having an election that may not be fair, what the president needs to do is to reassure the country and not attack the clergyman. That’s an insult on the church.
“Because of politics, those who were kids when Cardinal Onaiyekan started his Ecclesiastical ministry are now disrespecting the man of God.”
