At least 17 people have been injured after a car struck football fans celebrating a world cup win in Mexico.

Footage shared online showed a black car driving through a large gathering of fans in Cabo San Lucas following Mexico’s win over Czechia on Thursday.

Authorities are understand exactly what happened, the city council said, adding that the driver was arrested and taken into custody with injuries.

The council said police, ambulance and firefighters were immediately sent out in response.

Medical services personnel arrived at the scene to secure the area and take the casualties to hospital.

Police are investigating what caused the incident, and emergency services are offering support to the families of the injured.

The affected roads have since been reopened with initial investigations completed.
