Canada threatens to cut electricity to US as trade spat with Trump intensifies
- Ontario Premier Doug Ford has threatened to cut off electricity exports to the U.S. as President Donald Trump‘s trade war with Canada escalates.
- “We power 1.5 million homes and businesses. Everything’s on the table. I’ll do whatever it takes,” Ford said while insisting that Ontario is prepared to cut off exports of electricity and critical minerals, including high-grade nickel and processed uranium essential to U.S. national defense, if the economic dispute deteriorates further.
- The trade conflict intensified in recent days after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney exited negotiations over excessive U.S. demands, triggering 50 percent U.S. tariffs on roughly $20 billion in Canadian goods and planned Canadian counter-tariffs.
- Tensions escalated even further on Monday as Trump threatened a 50 percent tariff on Canadian automobiles, auto parts, and steel starting next year and accused Canada of ripping off the U.S.
- Ford said Monday that Trump has miscalculated Canadians’ willingness to endure economic pain rather than give in to U.S. pressure, stating, “He underestimates Canada. We’re all in. Up here, we’re at a fever pitch, everyone’s in for an economic war. They know they’re going to have to sacrifice.”
