Canada confirms first hantavirus case in tourist on Vancouver Island

A Canadian national has tested positive for hantavirus in British Columbia after disembarking the MV Hondius luxury cruise ship.
The patient, from Yukon, developed mild symptoms and is currently in stable condition while isolating in Victoria, BC.
This individual is one of four Canadians isolating on Vancouver Island following an outbreak linked to the cruise, which departed Argentina on 1 April.
The Andes strain of hantavirus, identified in the outbreak, can cause severe lung illness and has a fatality rate of up to 50 per cent, with three deaths already linked to the cruise.
Despite the severity, experts believe it is “very, very unlikely” the situation will escalate into a pandemic similar to Covid-19, with any potential UK cases expected to be manageable.
