Cagliari forward Yael Trepy has regained consciousness and been taken off mechanical ventilation two days after he was pulled unconscious from a swimming pool in Sardinia.

The 20-year-old was airlifted to hospital on Sunday afternoon after getting into difficulty at a villa while swimming with friends.

Trepy was placed in a medically induced coma and put on a ventilator after the incident. His condition has since improved, with doctors gradually reducing his sedation and ventilation on Tuesday.

Cagliari said the process allowed Trepy to wake from the induced coma.

The Director of the Emergency and Intensive Care Unit at Santissima Annunziata Civil Hospital in Sassari, Dr Stefania Milia, said on Wednesday in a statement that Trepy had fully recovered consciousness.

“Upon awakening, the patient showed a full recovery of consciousness: he is alert and co-operative and, at present, shows no evident neurological deficits,” he said.

Trepy remains in intensive care and will continue to be closely monitored.

“[He] continues to receive close clinical and respiratory monitoring,” Milia added.

An earlier medical update said Trepy was “fever-free” and that his respiratory function had improved from his severe condition at the time of hospital admission.

However, doctors said his prognosis remained guarded.

The incident reportedly occurred after Trepy reached an area of the swimming pool where he could not touch the bottom and got into difficulty.

Trepy had been given the weekend off with his Cagliari team-mates following their 1-0 Coppa Italia victory over Arezzo on Friday.

He played 54 minutes in that match.

The forward made eight Serie A appearances for Cagliari last season, scoring once. He joined the club’s academy in 2022 after beginning his youth career with Parisian side US Creteil-Lusitanos.

His recovery of consciousness and removal from mechanical ventilation mark a significant improvement, although Trepy remains in intensive care under medical supervision.
