Can a fan spread cold air around a room?
Fans move air around, rather than lowering a room’s temperature. But, you can make a fan blow colder air, by using a few clever tactics.
One is placing a frozen water bottle or bowl of ice cubes right in front of a fan, although it’s important to keep water away from any electrical wires or the fan’s motor. Alternatively, you could put the fan right in front of an open window at night, to pull cooler air into the room and circulate it.

Now reduced by 20 per cent, the portable pram fan featured in our best fans guide. Home appliance expert Joanne Lewsley rated its versatility and flexible tripod design, noting: “You can bend and wrap it around almost anything, and the 360-degree adjustable head means you’re not stuck with airflow in one direction.”
Whether you clip it onto a pram or bed frame, Joanne also found the fan to be “impressively quiet, especially on lower speeds,” so it shouldn’t disturb sleeping babies.

Can I take my handheld fan on a plane?
If you’re heading off on holiday soon, you may be wondering whether you can take a handheld fan on a plane. The answer is yes: you can take a portable handheld fan in hand luggage and hold luggage. It must contain a battery that complies with safety regulations and if unsure, you can check with your airline first. As a general rule, lithium-ion batteries must be carried in cabin luggage if they’re removable or built-in and within the allowed baggage limit.

Are handheld fans effective in a heatwave?
Handheld fans are a great portable option for comfort on the move. While they do not lower room temperature like an air conditioner, handheld fans can increase air circulation to create a breeziness that offers sweet relief in a heatwave. Plus, some models, like Shark’s chillpill, have a misting element for extra cooling support.
