A BBC News presenter has bid a final farewell to the broadcaster after nearly a decade. Award-winning reporter Thomas Mackintosh revealed today on social media that he was departing the BBC after nine and a half years in the role. He famously got married live on TV as part of a special news broadcast two years ago.

In a post on X this morning, he wrote: “Time to tap in one last time … after 9.5 years today’s my final shift at BBC News. It really has been an honour and a privilege to have worked here for nearly a decade alongside so many talented and tenacious colleagues.

“I’ll miss this place and will be immensely grateful for everything it has taught me! Time to tap in for one final time … and to try and not get stuck in the revolving doors.”

His colleagues and friends rushed to the comment section to pay tribute to the presenter, who has reported on big stories including the death of the Queen in 2022. “Wow can’t believe it’s been nearly a decade. Very proud of you xx,” one wrote.

Another added: “Thomas you’ll be seriously missed!! You’re an amazing journalist and anyone would be lucky to have you. Good luck with your next exciting chapter!!”

A third penned: “You’re so great to work with. They’re lucky to have you as a colleague!” with a fourth writing: “You will be so missed Thomas. It’s been such a pleasure working with you and wishing you every success in what comes next!”

Thomas got married to his wife live on air at Old Marylebone Town Hall, where he was one of 100 couples tying the knot in order to mark 100 years since the very first wedding held at the beautiful venue.

Footage of Thomas preparing to marry Paige was shown as he took a day off to marry the love of his life. At the time, a BBC News banner read across the screen: “Breaking: The BBC’s very own Thomas Mackintosh is now a married man.”

During the segment, Thomas put some of his own journalistic knowledge to work and told everyone about his plans. He said: “As it happens, I’m one of the couples getting married today – and as part of the coverage I’ve been speaking to many others doing the same. It’s quite unique to share such an important day with so many other couples.

“And today certainly sounds like it’s going to be chaos – but organised chaos: Seven couples an hour, starting from 08:00 and going well into the night. You get a time, do the legal bits and you leave a few minutes later. Then registrars repeat that pattern 99 times until all 100 couples have had their ceremonies. It has a speed dating feel to it!”
