The hosts of BBC Breakfast marked a special milestone on Tuesday.

The latest edition (May 19) of the hit morning programme saw Sally Nugent and Jon Kay return to the Salford studio to deliver the day’s biggest headlines from across the UK and around the world.

Later in the show, the hosts celebrated some “exciting” news about their former co-star Carol Kirkwood. The beloved weather presenter notably left BBC Breakfast last month, after 28 years with the broadcaster.

Now, Carol has been nominated in the National Television Awards longlist, and that’s not the only recognition for the morning programme.

Sharing the news on today’s BBC Breakfast, Jon began: “We’ve heard this morning that two documentaries made by the BBC Breakfast team have been nominated in the National Television Awards longlist.”

Sally added: “Our Girls: The Southport Families, a one-hour documentary hearing from the parents of Alice da Silva Aguiar, Elsie Dot Stancombe and Bebe King, has been nominated in the Authored Documentary category.”

Jon continued: “And Sir Chris Hoy: Cancer, Courage and Me, filmed with the cyclist and his family is also a contender in the same category.”

Celebrating Carol’s nomination, Sally said: “There’s also some exciting news for our friend, Carol – Carol Kirkwood. Just a month after she switched off the alarm clock, she has been nominated as Best TV Presenter, recognising more than 25 years on the television.”

Jon added: “25 years of commitment to umbrellas, wet weather gear,” before Sally shared: “If she was here, she’d actually say 28. Why are we always saying more than 25? It’s 28.”

Jon concluded: “Good luck to Carol, [and] to the documentaries. BBC Breakfast, itself, is in the Daytime category as well.”

Back in January, Carol announced her departure from BBC Breakfast, saying that she wanted to travel and spend more time with her husband, Steve Randall.

Carol’s last show was on April 1, with the star giving a heartfelt goodbye speech live on air.

Closing the programme, she told viewers: “Thank you for trusting me, be it telling you about heatwaves or snow, to the everyday question of, ‘Do I need to take a brolly?’

“To my colleagues past and present, both in front and behind the camera, I owe you all so much. You’ve been my team, my safety net, and, very often, my family. We’ve shared breaking news, long shifts, plenty of laughter, bad hair days, and the occasional moment of pure chaos. And do you know what? I wouldn’t change a second of it.”
