Bayelsa unveils committees for 30th anniversary

The Bayelsa State Government has inaugurated six sub-committees to begin preparations for activities marking the 30th anniversary of the state’s creation, promising what it described as a historic celebration.
Speaking on Friday while inaugurating the committees at Government House, Yenagoa, the Deputy Governor, Dr Peter Akpe, said the anniversary would provide an opportunity for the state to appreciate God for the progress recorded over the past three decades.
Akpe charged members of the committees to submit proposals for activities within two weeks, stressing the need for careful planning to ensure a memorable celebration.
He said, “Bayelsa has countless reasons to appreciate God for what He has done for our land and people in the last 30 years, particularly in the area of development.
“I urge the various sub-committees to come up with proposals for the activities and events within the next two weeks in line with their respective terms of reference. Strategic things have to be done to make the anniversary significant and historic.”
The deputy governor disclosed that the three-day anniversary celebration would begin on September 29 and would be preceded by two weeks of inauguration of public infrastructure projects completed by the Prosperity Administration.
According to him, activities lined up for the celebration include a cultural carnival, boat regatta, an anniversary lecture, sporting events, a state banquet and an awards night.
The inaugurated committees include the Awards Sub-Committee, chaired by His Majesty King Bubaraye Dakolo; the Sports Sub-Committee, headed by Daniel Igali; and the Lecture Sub-Committee, chaired by Prof. Stephen Olali.
Others are the Mega Praise Sub-Committee, jointly chaired by Akpe and the Managing Director of Premium Trust Bank, Dr Emmanuel Emiefenim; the Cultural Sub-Committee, headed by Rt. Hon. Monday Bubou-Obolo; and the Publicity Sub-Committee, chaired by the Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Mrs Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai.
