The Bauchi State government has lifted the suspension placed on commercial activities in some cattle markets across Alkaleri, Bauchi, Kirfi and Tafawa Balewa local government areas.

The decision, according to a statement issued on Wednesday by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, takes immediate effect.

The government said the temporary reopening of the markets became necessary due to their strategic importance in livestock trading, particularly ahead of the forthcoming Eid al-Kabir celebration.

It explained that the move would enable residents to access the markets to purchase sacrificial animals for the festival.

According to the statement, the reopening will last for two weeks.

The government added that the decision was reached in consultation with security agencies, who, alongside local authorities and traditional leaders, will continue to monitor activities in the affected markets to ensure security and peaceful conduct.

DAILY POST reports that the state government had, on April 9, 2026, approved the immediate suspension of commercial activities in several cattle markets across Alkaleri, Bauchi, Kirfi and Tafawa Balewa local government areas, citing growing security concerns.

The government said the measure was taken to address security threats linked to the markets, including cattle rustling, kidnapping, killings, extortion, illegal arms exchange and other criminal activities.
