Bandits raid Sokoto community, police probe reported abduction, killing

Bandits have attacked Girkau village in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, with an Independent National Electoral Commission staff member reportedly abducted during the incident.
A resident of the community was also reportedly killed in the attack, which occurred on Thursday morning.
However, the Sokoto State Police Command said it had yet to confirm either the reported abduction or death.
The command’s spokesman, DSP Ahmed Rufai, said the police were aware of the attack but were still trying to establish what happened.
“We are aware of the attack, but no death has been recorded as far as we are concerned.
“I will get back to the DPO in charge of the area to ascertain what happened and confirm the casualty situation,” the police spokesman said.
He said the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area would be contacted to obtain further details and verify the casualty situation.
The reported victim of the abduction was identified as an INEC staff member, while another resident was allegedly killed.
Details of the attack, including the circumstances surrounding the reported abduction and killing, remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.
The incident comes amid continued security challenges in rural parts of Sokoto State, where armed bandits have carried out attacks, abductions and killings.
Communities in Kebbe and other parts of the state have previously faced attacks, forcing residents to restrict movement and adjust farming and other daily activities over security concerns.
However, the police had not confirmed that the victim was abducted or that anyone was killed in Thursday’s attack as of the time of filing.
