At least 15 people died and 10 were injured after a truck carrying iron rods and numerous passengers overturned on a major highway in central Bangladesh early on Monday.
Police reported that the crash occurred at around 5am in the Soratoil area of Tangail district, 83km northwest of the capital Dhaka, after the driver lost control of the vehicle.
Local police chief Fuad Hossain said the truck was carrying hitchhiking passengers and travelling from Dhaka to the northern region as vacationers began traveling ahead of the Muslim festival Eid al-Adha, which falls on Thursday.
The truck overturned and killed them at the scene, the police chief added.
Road accidents kill thousands of people every year in the South Asian nation of more than 170 million because of lax oversight of traffic rules, bad road conditions, and unskilled driving.
