An injury sustained by Ben White forced Arsenal into an unwanted tactical reshuffle in their must-win game against West Ham.
The Gunners right-back suffered a knee injury after jarring his leg while making a challenge. White was visibly uncomfortable after suffering the issue and could not continue, with Martin Zubimendi coming in his place and Declan Rice shifting to right-back.
With just two Premier League games remaining, White could miss the decisive weeks in Arsenal’s bid to clinch a first domestic title in 22 years and cut a devastated figure as he limped around the outside of the pitch.
After being recently recalled into the international fold, the defender could also miss out on the World Cup with the tournament set to kick off in just one month.
Gary Neville pinpointed the moment White hurt himself after clashing knees with Crysencio Summerville while on commentary for Sky Sports, saying: “I have to say that [White’s injury] is easily prevented if you go in strong wth a real sturdy block.
“He swung his leg out, in a pretty weak fashion. [Doing that means] you are asking for trouble.”
Arsenal headed into the game without their first-choice right-back, Jurrien Timber. The Dutchman has missed the last 11 games with an ankle injury and his absence has been keenly felt.
Manchester City’s 3-0 win over Brentford on Saturday evening piled the pressure back onto Arsenal, who were five points ahead of their title rivals having played one more game.
