Archaeologists in race against time to save vital Bronze Age artefacts
- Archaeologists are set to begin a major six-month excavation at Flag Fen near Peterborough next year to save vital Bronze Age artefacts before climate change dries out the peat preserving them.
- Built around 3,300 years ago using approximately 22,000 posts, the 1.1km timber causeway served as a crucial route for trade, communication, and potential rituals over 400 years.
- The dig has secured £700,000 in funding from Defra and Historic England to open up the largest excavation area in the monument’s history.
- Flag Fen has been on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register since 2012, with experts warning unexcavated sections could be lost forever within a couple of years.
- The project will actively involve the local community by offering volunteering opportunities, supervisor training, and tour leader roles.
