Adam Wharton expressed he would not “sit here and cry” over his omission from Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad, despite another impressive performance for Crystal Palace in their Conference League final on Wednesday.
The midfielder was instrumental in Crystal Palace’s Conference League triumph, providing the catalyst for Jean-Philippe Mateta’s lone goal in the 51st minute against Rayo Vallecano.
Wharton was named player of the match in the final, which secured Palace their first European trophy and qualification for the Europa League next season.
He acknowledged that his inclusion in the World Cup squad was never guaranteed and that Tuchel informed him it was a close decision, but he remains focused on his club duties.
Wharton played the full game despite a recent ankle injury sustained in Palace’s final Premier League match, managing the swelling with ice and painkillers to ensure his participation in the final.
