Aaron Ramsey is set to be appointed by League One side Oxford United just weeks after retiring from football. Oxford have been on the hunt for a new manager since Matt Bloomfield was sacked last week following the club’s relegation to the third tier of English football.
Bloomfield had only taken the reins from Gary Rowett in January. But it appears that Oxford are looking towards a former Arsenal star ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
According to The Telegraph, Ramsey and Oxford are in advanced talks over him taking charge at the Kassam Stadium. There was interest from the Welsh FA in the former midfielder, with there being doubt over the future of Craig Bellamy as he continues to be linked with the vacancy at Burnley.
But Ramsey reportedly wanted to forge himself a career in club management. The now 35-year-old has been working on his coaching badges over the last few seasons and even had a brief spell in charge of boyhood club Cardiff City.
Ramsey is expected to take former Wales team-mate Chris Gunter with him as his assistant should he move to Oxford. His move is set to come just weeks after he confirmed his retirement following a spell in Mexico.
A statement read from Ramsey read: “This has not been an easy decision to make. After a lot of consideration, I have decided to retire from football. Firstly, I want to start with Wales.
“It has been my privilege to wear the Welsh shirt and experience so many incredible moments in it. It would not have been possible without the incredible input of all the managers I have played under and all the staff who have helped me in many ways.

“To the Red Wall. You have been there through thick and thin! You have been there through the highs and lows, and you have been an essential and indispensable part of our success.
“I can’t thank you enough. We’ve been through everything together and it’s been an honour to represent you. Diolch.
“Secondly, thank you to all the clubs I’ve been lucky enough to play for. Thank you to all the managers and staff that have helped me be able to live my dream and play at the highest level.
“And a huge thank you to my wife and children and all my family. Without you by my side throughout, none of this would have been possible.”
