A video circulating on social media has sparked outrage after showing what appears to be a violent confrontation in Edo State, during which civilians overpowered and assaulted uniformed police officers.

The footage shared by Instablog9ja on Monday captures a chaotic scene involving several young men and bystanders surrounding police officers dressed in camouflage uniforms with high-visibility vests. One civilian is seen repeatedly attacking a male police officer despite efforts by another officer and some bystanders to stop the assault.

The video also shows a female police officer attempting to intervene before she was allegedly attacked by another male civilian, who pushed her to the ground. She was eventually helped up by a female colleague.

The circumstances leading to the confrontation could not be immediately established.

The incident has generated widespread reactions on X, with many users condemning the assault and warning of possible legal consequences for those involved.

Reacting, #AbujaxQueen wrote, “I just hope this guys root in jail, how on earth will u be hitting women police?”

Another user, #ashman_babane, said, “Never get into a physical or verbal confrontation with a law enforcement officer in uniform. The consequences can be severe. No country takes lightly the public humiliation or assault of its security agencies, especially the police. Don’t let a moment of anger make a decision you’ll regret for the rest of your life.”

#jaayzzzzzzzz_ wrote, “Why in your right senses would you hit an officer on uniform? The men that are meant to protect you under the rain, under the sun, they are their even with the cheap pay they get No police man or woman deserves to be treated this way. Those guys should be locked up for life. If e easy make Una join the force too.”

Offering a different perspective, #AyoKrissyOmonla wrote, “But these are just traffic police, these guys no too get wahala like that .. simple dialogue would have resolved this.”

Similarly, #Clinton207O stated, “Oh oh, I know the NPF can make you do the unthinkable, but those guys shouldn’t have engaged them in physical combat. They may spend so long a time in custody.”

#Nmirie25 also condemned the assault, writing, “No matter what those guys are very wrong if eventually, my mama na police you fall her in this manner bro relocate from the state because i fit kpai you the way you want to kpai my mom.”

Questioning the officers’ response, #Dr_Mind01 wrote, “Haa a trained police office chopping reckless beating like that only reveals one thing, these fellas are not safeguarding anything.”

Also reacting, #DeyAle_Amos said, “I will be here when they parade this fuuuls for assaulting officers on uniform. As much as police can be annoying sometimes, never assault them when on uniform especially the female ones cos you don buy market be that.”

The video has renewed public discussion over attacks on security personnel and relations between civilians and law enforcement officers, with many users insisting that grievances against the police should be resolved through lawful means rather than violence.
