A young man, identified as Umar Halilu Babatuwa, has died after sustaining severe injuries in a suspected gang attack along the stretch between Dan Agundi and Nassarawa areas of Kano metropolis on Sunday night.
Speaking to DAILY POST, Umar’s elder brother, Aliyu Halilu, said the deceased left their family house in Dan Agundi at about 10:00 p.m. on Sunday before the incident occurred.
According to him, Umar was brought back home shortly afterwards with multiple stab wounds and deep machete cuts allegedly inflicted by suspected gang members.
Aliyu said the family immediately rushed him to hospital in an effort to save his life, but he later succumbed to his injuries.
“About 200 of them stormed the area and attacked people. We do not know exactly who carried out the attack. The way they treated us, may Allah judge them as well,” he said.
He further alleged that while taking Umar to hospital, the family encountered police officers but could not secure assistance from any of them to accompany them or facilitate urgent medical attention for the victim.
Expressing frustration over seeking justice, Aliyu questioned the effectiveness of reporting such incidents to authorities.
“Even if you say we should report to the government, how many people have been killed already and what has the government done? We have left everything to Allah,” he lamented.
Aliyu said the family could not explain why suspected gangs had continued to operate in their neighbourhood and appealed to the Kano State Government and security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident and take decisive measures to prevent a recurrence.
As of the time of filing this report, the spokesperson of the Kano State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
