Teen among five who drowned in UK waters during recent heatwave
Heatwave: Thunderstorms expected as extreme heat weather warning extended
Three people, including a teenager, have died after getting into difficulty swimming in open water, bringing the total number of drownings during the recent heatwave to five.
Brody Leach, 22, was recovered from the River Severn in Shrewsbury, a 15-year-old boy’s body was found at Testwood Lakes near Southampton, and a 69-year-old man died in Clacton.
These incidents follow two other deaths earlier in the week: a 50-year-old man at Aberavon beach and a teenage boy in a lake in Syston, Leicestershire.
The deaths occurred amidst widespread warnings about the dangers of swimming in open water, particularly the risk of cold water shock syndrome, during a period of record-breaking temperatures.
Friday was confirmed as the UK’s hottest June day on record, with a provisional temperature of 37.3C in Santon Downham, Suffolk, following two other record-breaking days.
