The Netherlands secured a dominant 5-1 victory over Sweden in a World Cup Group F match, propelling them to the top of the group standings.
Sunderland’s Brian Brobbey, a surprise inclusion in the starting line-up, quickly justified his selection by scoring two goals within the opening 17 minutes of the game.
Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo further extended the Dutch lead with two goals early in the second half, capitalising on opportunities including a rebound from a missed Brobbey hat-trick attempt.
Newcastle’s Anthony Elanga managed to pull one goal back for Sweden just before the hour mark, offering a brief moment of respite for his team.
Substitute Crysencio Summerville, of West Ham United, completed the rout for the Netherlands, scoring their fifth goal in the 90th minute to seal the comprehensive win.
