A man has been killed and two others are seriously injured after a collision near a picturesque Scottish town.

Police are urging witnesses to come forward with any information they may have about the crash, which happened at around 7.35pm on Saturday on the A709 Dumfries to Lockerbie road, near to Lochfield, Lochmaben.

The incident involved a black Vauxhall Vectra and a white Citroen Dispatch. Emergency services raced to the scene before three people were taken to hospital for treatment.

Tragically, the driver of the Vauxhall, a 50-year-old man, died a short time later. The occupants of the Citroen, a 67-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman, remain in hospital in a serious condition.

The road was closed for around eight hours to allow inquiries to be carried out and reopened at about 3.30am on Sunday.

Sergeant Wayne Carnochan of Police Scotland said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the man who has died at this time.

“Our inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of this crash and we are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed anything around this time to contact us.

“In addition, anyone with relevant dash-cam footage is asked to get in touch as this may be able to assist.”
