The US visa complications that left Switzerland striker stranded ahead of World Cup
Five World Cup rule changes you need to know
Switzerland international Breel Embolo is currently stranded in his home country, unable to join his teammates in the US for their pre-World Cup training camp due to a last-minute travel authorisation complication.
His ESTA was unexpectedly placed under review hours before the team’s departure, linked to a 2023 conviction for making threats following a 2018 altercation.
Embolo attended the US Embassy in Bern to submit a visa application, which the Swiss football federation confirmed is being processed as a priority.
US authorities specifically inquired whether physical violence was involved in the case, which the federation clarified was not the case.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security stated that ESTA applications are continuously vetted against law enforcement databases, and failure to disclose criminal history can lead to denial or revocation.
