UK set for hottest Bank Holiday Monday as temperatures soar in heatwave

The UK experienced its hottest May Day in at least 79 years on Sunday, with Kew Gardens in south-west London recording 32.3C, following Saturday which marked the first time this year temperatures surpassed 30C.
Monday is predicted to be the hottest bank holiday on record, with “historic” temperatures of up to 34C forecast for Greater London and the South East, while Wales and Northern Ireland also saw record highs on Sunday.
Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan described the near 35C temperatures in May as “pretty historic,” with heatwave conditions officially met in eight areas across England on Sunday.
Tragically, 15-year-old Declan Sawyer died after being recovered from Swanholme Lakes in Lincoln on Sunday, having been reported in trouble in the water.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued its first amber health alert of 2026, warning of a significant impact on health and social care services until Wednesday, particularly for vulnerable groups like older adults, with Age UK advising staying indoors during peak heat and checking on neighbours.
