The Met Office predicts heatwave temperatures will soar to an extraordinary 35C on Monday and Tuesday – though colder weather appears set to arrive shortly afterwards.

The national forecaster indicates today should become the warmest day of the year thus far, surpassing the benchmark established only yesterday. Monday is anticipated to shatter the record once more – potentially becoming the hottest May day on record.

Following similar peaks on Tuesday, the Met Office suggests temperatures should reach 30C across southern regions on Wednesday and 28C on Thursday. Nevertheless, meteorological models now indicate the cold snap may not be far off.

The ECMWF model points towards temperatures potentially struggling to climb much beyond 10C throughout substantial portions of the UK on June 3. Early morning temperatures could plummet to 0C in certain Scottish areas.

Minimum potential temperature readings indicate eastern, central and southern England, alongside South Wales, may be the sole locations experiencing double-digit figures at 6am, reports the Mirror.

Temperature anomaly charts for early June display deep blue zones right across the UK. This signifies where temperatures are forecast to fall considerably beneath the seasonal average.

Meanwhile, the Met Office’s 35C forecasts for Monday and Tuesday would represent a fresh benchmark for all-time May temperatures. The existing record sits at 32.8C. Temperatures climbed beyond 28C on Friday and are forecast to remain that way every day through to at least Thursday, potentially delivering a full week of sweltering conditions.

An official heatwave is declared once temperatures exceed the designated heatwave threshold for three consecutive days. This threshold ranges between 25C and 28C depending on the county across the UK.

The Met Office forecast for Monday reads: “Cloudy in northwest Scotland with rain at times, otherwise most places seeing lots of sunshine. It remains hot, especially in the south but cooler along the coasts.”

It further states for Tuesday to Thursday: “Staying hot, sunny and mostly dry over the next few days with temperatures well above average. A little more patchy cloud on Thursday, perhaps with the odd shower.”
