  • A Canadian national has tested positive for hantavirus in British Columbia after disembarking the MV Hondius luxury cruise ship.
  • The patient, from Yukon, developed mild symptoms and is currently in stable condition while isolating in Victoria, BC.
  • This individual is one of four Canadians isolating on Vancouver Island following an outbreak linked to the cruise, which departed Argentina on 1 April.
  • The Andes strain of hantavirus, identified in the outbreak, can cause severe lung illness and has a fatality rate of up to 50 per cent, with three deaths already linked to the cruise.
  • Despite the severity, experts believe it is “very, very unlikely” the situation will escalate into a pandemic similar to Covid-19, with any potential UK cases expected to be manageable.
