Landslide threat after woman dies during torrential downpours in Japan
- A woman in her sixties has died after her vehicle became submerged in an underpass in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, amid severe flooding caused by torrential rain across eastern Japan.
- Record-breaking precipitation was observed in Niijima, south of central Tokyo, where 485mm of rain fell within 24 hours, registering the highest level since local records began.
- The Japan Meteorological Agency issued its highest Level 5 emergency landslide warnings for parts of the Izu Island chain, as well as Level 4 alerts for Chiba and Saitama prefectures.
- Torrential downpours severely impacted Tokyo, Kanagawa, and Chiba prefectures, resulting in widespread train service disruptions, school closures, and minor injuries.
