Time was that having your life “sorted” – a nebulous but lofty ideal many of us aspire to without ever feeling we’ve quite accomplished it – involved the achievement of major milestones. Securing a spouse, spawn, mortgage and sensible family car with adequate boot space – these were the surefire markers of having evolved into a real adult with your s*** together.
In the world of 2026, however, when rates of marriage and babymaking have been on the decline for years and home-ownership has become an ever-more outlandish dream for young people, a new set of criteria has entered the chat.
A recent survey of 2,000 UK adults by British Gas revealed that it’s keeping on top of the small things that provides a true sense of control over our existence in today’s chaotic world. Recycling everything, putting clothes away (rather than dumping them on a chair) and drinking two litres of water a day were among the top 27 #adulting achievements, alongside knowing where the spare batteries are, unpacking immediately after a trip and, gulp, not having any empty wrappers on the floor of your car…

Here are the top seven signs you have your life together in 2026:
1. You make regular savings
Finally, in at number one, and perhaps unsurprisingly, is putting aside something for a rainy day. What, after all, says large and in charge like a healthy bank balance – complete with a current account that’s not overdrawn, a credit card that’s paid off at regular intervals, a well-tended ISA and “buffer” of savings to cover at least three months’ salary should you lose your job? Over half (52 per cent) of people polled agreed: being fiscally responsible is the ultimate sign that you’ve made it.
2. You make your bed every day
According to 34 per cent of the Great British public, daily bed-making means you’ve got things all figured out. Never mind the fact you’ll simply un-make it again every single night – taking the requisite five minutes to straighten sheets, smooth out duvets and plump up pillows really demonstrates that a) you’re worth it, Loreal-style (#selfcare) and b) you get up early enough to complete this daily ritual in the first place. At its core, this small but mighty act sets the tone for the whole day – it’s not even 9am and you’ve created order out of chaos? Phenomenal work. Extra points if you reconfigure an army of display-purposes-only cushions and soft toys into the bargain.
3. You know when bin day is
In my twenties – in fact, right up until I was a homeowner myself – the specific day of the week on which different types of rubbish were collected was information as alien to me as the laws of nuclear physics. So I know from personal experience that there is little that makes one feel less in control of one’s own destiny than forgetting to put the bins out, and accumulating a steadily growing pile of garbage as a result. Conversely, finally maturing to a stage at which bin day is no longer a mystery but a concrete quantity, known and acted upon on a weekly basis, makes you feel like you’re totally bossing it as CEO of your own household, according to 35 per cent of survey respondents.

In modern life, being able to confidently state that there isn’t a single mysterious or unnecessary subscription coming out of your bank account each month is the ultimate flex, according to 36 per cent of people polled. The real test? Signing up for the free trial and cancelling it before you get stung with your first payment. True icon behaviour.
5. You say no without feeling guilty
This could be summed up as having “boundaries”, as the kids say, and it’s where my fellow millennials might come unstuck, even if they have the rest of life down pat. But genuinely having control over your life means being able to live it on your own terms and drop the compulsive people pleasing.
6. You can admit when you’re wrong

It makes sense: owning our mistakes is surely indicative of a wider ownership of our existence, plus agency over our actions.
7. You enjoy your own company
If you struggle to keep on top of the domestic realm but can happily take yourself off for a solo date, don’t despair! A whopping 43 per cent of people agreed that developing a good relationship with yourself was a key component to having it “together”. Enjoying time alone was deemed far more important than having organised kitchen cupboards or washing up immediately after a dinner party, for example.
Ticked off all seven signs? Congratulations! You’re officially a real live adult!
