La Liga: Barcelona, Atlético Madrid escalate Álvarez transfer standoff

The transfer saga surrounding Julián Álvarez has taken another turn, with Barcelona president Joan Laporta publicly reaffirming his club’s interest in the Atlético Madrid striker, only for Atlético to respond with an emphatic rejection.
As reported by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on X on Wednesday, Laporta made it clear that Barcelona remain determined to sign Álvarez this summer.
“We are still very interested in Julián Álvarez,” Laporta said, stressing that Barça would like their offer to be accepted while maintaining “the utmost respect for Atlético de Madrid.”
The Barcelona president then delivered a direct message to Atlético.
“If they are willing to sell Julián Álvarez during this summer transfer window, we would be ready to buy him,” Laporta said, provided the two clubs can reach an agreement over the offer Barcelona have already submitted.
Laporta also revealed that he had personally contacted Atlético chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín to ratify Barcelona’s proposal.
“We have a great deal of respect for Atlético de Madrid and its directive. We have known each other for many years,” Laporta explained.
According to the Barça president, Barcelona received information suggesting that Atlético could be prepared to sell Álvarez, prompting the Catalan club to maintain their offer.
“It’s clear that our offer remains valid until the end of the market,” Laporta added.
However, Atlético Madrid have responded with a statement, insisting that there is no possibility of Álvarez joining Barcelona.
“The player is being victimized, but the only victim of the Julián case is us,” Atlético said.
The Madrid club claimed that the situation has already caused significant damage to the institution, both financially and socially.
“They have harmed us economically and socially,” Atlético stated, before delivering their strongest message: “There is 0% chance of selling him to Barça.”
Atlético also insisted that the dispute is no longer simply a question of money.
“This situation is not about money, it’s about dignity,” the club declared.
The Spanish side further accused unnamed parties of creating a campaign based on “many lies and half-truths,” arguing that Atlético are ultimately the club paying the price for the controversy.
“The only one who pays for this is Atlético,” the statement concluded.
The contrasting positions leave the Álvarez saga at an extraordinary impasse. Barcelona are publicly insisting that their offer remains available and that they are ready to negotiate, while Atlético are equally publicly declaring that they will not sell the Argentine forward to Barça under any circumstances.
