Ensure peace in your domain or your staff of office will be withdrawn – Otu warns traditional rulers

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has directed traditional rulers in the state to do all in their power to promote peace in their different domains; otherwise, their staff of office will be withdrawn.

Otu, represented by his Deputy, Dr Peter Odey, at the annual International Leboku Festival held in Ugep in Yakurr LGA of the state, condemned recent inter-communal clashes between Ugep and Idomi communities in the LGA which resulted in the loss of lives and property.

He described the violence as a “show of shame” that dampened the celebrations, stressing that cancelling the festival would have undermined its core objective of fostering inter-communal harmony within the Yakurr Nation.

He reminded traditional rulers, including clan heads and certified leaders, of their responsibility to uphold peace, customs and traditions.

He warned that the state government would withdraw certificates of recognition from any royal father in whose domain peace breaks down.

Otu also stated that the government would not recognise parallel camps in certain areas until communities unite behind a single representative.

Chairman of Yakurr Local Government Area, Chief Inyang Yibala Igri, appealed for peace and urged communities to prioritise historical brotherhood, lay down grievances and choose development over destruction.

He emphasised that prosperity depends on unity and called on youths to embrace farming as a business while elders provide guidance.

Addressing the natives, guests and government dignitaries at the event, the Obol Lopon of Ugep and Traditional Ruler of Yakurr, HRM Obol Ufem Ubana, spoke about the traditional essence of the festival, assuring that they will do all in their power to sustain communal peace and brotherhood.

But he raised concerns over dual coronations, which have created tension in Agoi-Ibami.

He appealed to the government for the upgrade of the Ugep stadium, improved coverage by the Cross River Broadcasting Corporation in Yakurr and expressed gratitude for recent political appointments of Yakurr indigenes.
