VIDEO: Peter Obi arrives Edo for Archbishop Akubeze’s funeral rites

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has arrived in Edo State to attend the funeral rites of the late Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City, Most Rev. Augustine Akubeze.
Obi’s arrival was captured in a video shared on Wednesday by his official campaign photographer and media aide, Esther Umoh, showing the former Anambra State governor surrounded by a heavy crowd and security personnel.
The video also showed Obi arriving at the Holy Cross Cathedral in Benin City for the service of songs for the late archbishop.
“Peter Obi in Edo State for the service of songs of Late Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze,” Umoh captioned the video.
The Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City had announced a special period of Masses and prayers in honour of Akubeze, who died on July 9, 2026, aged 69.
The archdiocese scheduled a vigil Mass at the Holy Cross Cathedral for Wednesday, followed by several Masses through the night.
The funeral programme will continue on Thursday at St Paul Catholic Church, Airport Road, Benin City, with the lying-in-state scheduled for 7 am to 8:45 am, followed by the Office for the Dead at 9 am and the Funeral Mass at 10 am.
Akubeze was described by the archdiocese as a humble and committed servant of God who touched many lives through his ministry.
