England’s Toney charged with assault after London nightclub incident

England striker Ivan Toney has been charged with assault following an alleged incident at a nightclub in central London.
The 30-year-old Al-Ahli forward was charged on 31 July in connection with an incident that occurred on Wardour Street, Soho, on 6 December.
Toney has been charged with assault causing actual bodily harm and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 24 September.
As reported by the BBC on Friday, A spokesperson for the former Brentford striker said Toney acknowledged the charge but was looking forward to defending himself in court.
“Ivan acknowledges the charge and although he is naturally shocked, he looks forward to being allowed to clear his name in court,” the spokesperson said.
The striker began his professional career at Northampton Town before moving on to Newcastle United, Peterborough United and Brentford, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s top forwards.
Toney moved to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli in 2024 after a successful spell at Brentford, where his goalscoring performances earned him international recognition.
He was a surprise selection for England’s World Cup squad and started the team’s 6-4 victory over France in the bronze medal match. His only other appearance at the tournament came as a late substitute in England’s 2-1 semi-final defeat by Argentina.
The court case comes as Toney continues his football career in Saudi Arabia, with the forward expected to appear before magistrates in September as the legal process begins.
His representatives have maintained that he will use the opportunity to clear his name.
