Yobe State House of Assembly has called on the Federal Government, wealthy individuals, and donor agencies to provide urgent relief assistance to victims of the recent flood disaster in Damaturu and other communities across the state.

The call was made during plenary following a motion of urgent public importance moved by the member representing Damaturu II Constituency, Hon. Buba Ibrahim Kalallawa.

Presenting the motion, Hon. Kalallawa said the flood affected the communities of Dikumari, Malum Matari, Maduri, Malari, and Pompomari.

He noted that two lives were lost, while property worth millions of naira was destroyed.

The lawmaker expressed concern over the impact of the disaster, adding that many families had been displaced and their means of livelihood destroyed.

He, however, commended the state government for its prompt response through the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), describing the intervention as timely in alleviating the suffering of the victims.

Supporting the motion, the Leader of the House, Hon. Nasiru Hassan Yusuf, called on the contractor handling the expansion of drainages in Damaturu to hasten the work to ensure timely completion and prevent future flooding.

Presiding over the sitting, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Chiroma Buba Mashio, condoled with the victims.

He prayed to Almighty Allah to grant eternal rest to those who lost their lives and give their families the fortitude to bear the loss.

In another development, the House adopted the report of its Standing Committee on Basic and Secondary Education on the bill seeking to establish the Yobe State Senior Secondary Education Fund.

The bill scaled through after consideration of the committee’s recommendations.
