NEMA reaffirms commitment to transparency, equity

The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency, Zubaida Umar, has reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to upholding the Federal Character principle in its management processes, pledging continued transparency, fairness and due process in line with government regulations.
Umar gave the assurance during an interactive session at the headquarters of the Federal Character Commission in Abuja, where she met with the Commission’s Chairman, Hulayat Omidiran, and other commissioners.
According to a statement issued by NEMA on Thursday, the engagement formed part of the FCC’s routine interface with chief executives of Ministries, Departments and Agencies to acquaint them with the Commission’s procedures, guidelines and expectations.
The statement partly read, “The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs Zubaida Umar, has reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to upholding the Federal Character principle in its management processes, in line with relevant government regulations and guidelines.”
It added that while welcoming the NEMA delegation, Omidiran explained that “the engagement was part of the Commission’s routine interface with Chief Executives of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to acquaint them with the procedures, guidelines and expectations of the Commission.”
Responding, Umar expressed appreciation to the Commission for the opportunity to deepen collaboration.
“She affirmed NEMA’s commitment to adhering to the Federal Character principle, assuring that the Agency would continue to ensure transparency, fairness and due process in its management processes and other activities”, the statement added.
The statement further noted that during the interactive session, “an Honourable Commissioner of the FCC, Mr Pam Botmang, commended the Director General for her transparent leadership and encouraged further interactive sessions for sustainable collaboration between NEMA and the FCC and adherence to Federal Character principles.”
It added that “The interactive session was fruitful, providing opportunity for greater understanding of the activities and expectations of NEMA and the Federal Character Commission respectively.”
The Federal Character Commission is constitutionally mandated to promote fairness and equity in the distribution of public offices and socio-economic opportunities across Nigeria.
The Commission regularly engages with federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to ensure compliance with the Federal Character principle, thereby supporting inclusiveness, national unity, and balanced representation in the public service.
NEMA, established to coordinate disaster management and emergency response nationwide, is one of the federal agencies expected to comply with the Commission’s guidelines in its recruitment and administrative processes.
