Kogi poly suspends six lecturers over sex-for marks, cultism allegations

The management of the Kogi State Polytechnic has reportedly suspended some lecturers of the Polytechnic following allegations of sex-for-marks, cultism and sale of handouts to students.
Arewa PUNCH investigations revealed that these are acts forbidden by the management of the higher institution, as explained by the spokesperson of the Polytechnic, John Amos Onimisi, who confirmed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Lokoja.
According to Onimisi, “Six lecturers on Wednesday 22nd of July, 2026 were suspended by the management of the institution for unauthorised sales of handouts and textbooks while a lecturer was also suspended for alleged sexual harassment.”
Our correspondent further gathered that the once peaceful atmosphere of the polytechnic which depicted a true centre of academic activities has gradually given way to a hotbed of anxiety as students, especially the female students now live perpetually in fear and uncertainty as cultists’ activities and sex-for-mark syndrome have in recent time pervaded the campus environment.
Sources in the Polytechnic confided in Arewa PUNCH that all the pillars of disciplinary measures instituted by the management of the higher institution have collapsed since the assumption of office by Professor Salihu Sanusi Avidime as the Rector of the polytechnic.
A particular source who does not want his name in print because he is not authorised to speak to the media, further told Arewa PUNCH that “so bad is the situation such that some lecturers now openly seduce female students threatening to fail them unless they succumb to satisfying their sexual desires.”
The source readily pointed at the case of a certain lecturer in the Public Administration Department and another in the Graphics Design department (names with held) who are said to be currently trending on campus and who at different times were said to have threatened some female students to “either cooperate” and submit to their sexual advances or pay certain amounts of money ranging from N70,000 – N80,000 before they can pass their exams.
According to the source, “Sadly these lecturers’ insatiable amorous desire and corruption were tamed under the former management, but as soon as they noticed the ‘I-don’t-care’ attitude of the current rector, who hardly stays in office, the whole old bad traits of the polytechnic keep resurfacing even now at frightening dimensions.
“As we speak, sex-for-mark has gradually been reintroduced and one of the lecturers involved in this malaise was even accused of instructing a female student to go and book for a room in an hotel in town with her own money before he comes over.
“This female student has reported this incident to one of the management staff, but it seems everything has been compromised, and instead of getting justice, she is being insulted and intimidated for her boldness to speak out.
“This singular act confirms my assertion that disciplinary structure has collapsed. The corrupt lecturers are getting away with this ugly act while the female students are suffering in silence with most of them fearing to speak out for fear of being victimised and rusticated from the school. It is as bad as that,” the source told our correspondent.
Arewa PUNCH investigations again revealed that cultists’ activities have now resumed at a more dreadful scale as nocturnal meetings hitherto banned now take place in the full glare of some lecturers and security personnel who appear to be helpless
Another source who narrated a scary incident to our correspondent said, “A fortnight ago, we heard that the initiation ceremony of some students into cultism took place at one of the female hostels at around 2 am – 3 am. It was one of the eagled-eyed security personnel who reported this to management but up till now, no investigations have been carried out.
“The situation is getting bad everyday and if the government does not quickly do something, it will be worse than what it used to be when cultists openly threatened lecturers.
“Our campus is gradually getting unsafe for learning and cross fertilisation of intellectual and technical ideas
“The idea of a dress code and the wearing of the school’s identity card which was introduced by the former management have been jettisoned, as female students now dress indecently to classes while many of their male counterparts have been caught wearing dreadlocks and sazzy outfits unbecoming of decent and serious undergraduate students.
“Sales of handouts to students that was banned has now been re-introduced, and students now have to pay through their nose to meet up with the demands of some lecturers, thereby creating additional financial burden on them and their parents, coupled with the recent astronomical increase of school fees by over 200 per cent.
“We strongly believe that Governor Usman Ododo, who is the visitor to the school, must call this current management to order and he must be very swift about it, as impunity, truancy, and indolence have taken over the legacies left behind by the former rector, Prof Salisu Ogbo,” the source lamented.
Meanwhile, Onimisi has affirmed that the school management is aware of some of these allegations and the disciplinary committee of the Polytechnic is already investigating several of them, promising that the outcome of the investigations will be made available to journalists in due course.
